IoT Partner News
Resources for our Partners
June 2019 Edition

Welcome - Message from Tony
You may have heard that Microsoft is designating Microsoft Partner Center as the one-stop location for partners to manage their Microsoft relationship.
Make sure that your business profile on Microsoft Partner Center is optimized for IoT search results and Microsoft IoT referrals—increasing your networking and sales opportunities. See seven best practices below:
Include the term IoT in your company description.
Opt-in to allow Microsoft to add and remove search tags.
Select Azure within the Product drop-down menu.
Select Internet of Things within the Solutions drop-down menu.
Outline your IoT specialties in the skills and capabilities section.
Specify the sizes of customer from whom you want to receive referrals.
Create a profile for each country (to five) you do business in.
As you map out your schedule for Microsoft Inspire, July 14—18, 2019, in Las Vegas, NV, make a note of the 15 IoT sessions. Visit the session catalog and enter the search term IoT.
Don’t miss these updates in this issue of IoT Partner News: availability of Azure IoT Central template export, new Azure IoT Hub features, and mobility services for Azure Maps, and finally, congratulations to Accenture/Avanade, winners of the Microsoft IoT Partner of the Year award and to finalists PTC, Softbank, and Telelink.

Engineering Spotlight: Securing IoT Edge Devices

Figure 1. Realization of Azure IoT Edge Security Model
Azure IoT Edge lets you deploy and run your cloud workloads on Internet of Things (IoT) edge devices. But IoT edge devices—often running remotely—are highly vulnerable to security threats and require proper security attention.
Think of IoT edge devices as high value, high risk. The devices are physically accessible, they contain valuable IP, and deploying at scale provides an expanded attack surface. Also, IoT Edge is an open-source run-time, it’s up to developers to source and develop edge devices with their OEM partners to optimize security. Let’s drill down into what Microsoft offers to help developers secure edge devices.
IoT edge device security requires a uniform approach. To assist, Microsoft offers an Azure IoT Edge security model. It has four principles. At the bottom, is a tamper-resistant root of trust or secure silicon. Moving up the stack is a high assurance boot. This ensures bootstrapping of the OS that you want to run. Next is a secured execution environment. Finally, is protected general computing.
Microsoft realizes these principles using Azure IoT Edge Security Manager. It’s a uniform layer that Microsoft builds and maintains. It sits on top of the customer’s root of trust and below the operating system (OS). See Figure 1. above.
Azure IoT Edge Security Manager is a trusted computing base (TCB). It provides a native process for isolating the OS. If there is a zero-day attack on the OS, Azure IoT Edge Security won’t be vulnerable as it lies outside of the OS. Written in the Rust programming language, it can be safely and deeply integrated into hardware security modules (HSM) within your silicon.
This is a quick overview. Azure IoT Security Edge Manager takeaways:
1.  Transparent to the OS
2.  All open source
3.  Offers choice—adapts to the various HSM architectures and protocols
